The use of plastic foams as thermal insulating materials for building enclosures has increased rapidly in the world in recent years. Plastic foam insulation is generally used in places where it is difficult to use other types of insulation – e.g. in walls and cavities where it is not easy to get to. Liquid plastic foam insulation is perfect for those circumstances because it is installed as liquid which expands after a little while filling all the gaps and cavities on the way.
The most commonly used plastic foam insulations are rigid polystyrene in board form and rigid polyurethane in board form or as spray foam. Rigid and flexible plastic foams have a variety of applications that utilize combinations of the inherently high insulating value, resilience, low density, and lightweight structural characteristics of this class of materials. Major plastic foam insulation application is building insulation. Foam products used for this purpose include:
- Polyisocyanurate board stock, which is widely used for building wall and roof insulation
- Extruded polystyrene board stock.
- Spray polyurethane foam roofing which is used for commercial building roof insulation. Spry polyurethane foam provides a means to apply a continuous (without seams or joints) layer of roofing that is water tight and infiltration tight.
